Is Hormone Replacement Therapy Right for You?

Hot flashes. Memory problems. Depression, weight gain and vaginal dryness. Menopause is a real challenge for women, but menopause symptoms can be treated!

A woman’s hormone levels can start fluctuating as early as her 30’s or 40’s.  During this “perimenopause”  estrogen levels become erratic. This can create aggravating symptoms including headaches, weight gain, heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, development of fibroids or exacerbated endometriosis.

Most women can get relief from hot flashes, promote weight loss, and improve their psychological well-being and quality of life with Bioidentical estrogen, progesterone and testosterone therapy. This hormone therapy also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

Menopause and Perimenopause Symptoms

During menopause the ovaries decrease their output of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Menstruation ceases, just as other irritating symptoms begin: hot flashes, fatigue, sleep disturbances and depression.  Within about 3-5 years (usually by a women’s early to mid-50’s), her menstrual period will cease for a full year and she will be considered “post-menopausal.” Menopause and Perimenopause can create symptoms including:
  • Hot flashes & sweats
  • Diminshed libido/sex drive
  • Vaginal dryness/painful intercourse
  • Impaired concentration & memory
  • Weight gainMenopause hormone test
  • Reduced bone mineral density
  • Depression & mood swings
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Sleep disturbances & fatigue

A Better Approach: Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

We take a different approach than the usual synthetic estrogen replacement therapy with drugs like Premarin. Why? Because studies have shown increased risk of breast and endometrial cancer, and patients experience many unpleasant side effects with synthetic hormone replacements. They are unnaturally potent and have long-lasting effects. Women’s bodies cannot metabolize the foreign estrogens they contain, which are derived from horses. We have found that bioidentical hormone replacements are a much better alternative for our patients.

There has been uncertainty from both women and their physicians about the safety of hormone replacement therapy for many years. Read more information on Hormone Replacement Therapy.
